Improved P.A. Management

In order to strengthen the capacity building and planning process a wide range of activities were undertaken as described below:

Survey and Demarcation works were undertaken to delineate the sanctuary from the revenue area. Beat boundaries were also demarcated for better management and protection. At many places the existing sanctuary boundary was repaired especially. towards the revenue and sanctuary interface area. The old stone wall fence on the sanctuary boundary and along the R.F. areas was also strengthened to avoid future encroachments.

Every year large volume of soil is lost during monsoon due to erosion along the road sites especially in the undulating terrain. Erosion prone patches on the roads were identified and works like retention and protection wall etc. were taken up. Habitat improvement works for the P.A. constituted for the major activities and soil and moisture conservation activities namely check dams, nalla bunds, ponds, cause-way cum check dam etc. were taken up in different areas of the P.A. In addition old check dams were prepared and desalting was done to increase their life time. Lantana uprooting in weed infested areas was done to improve regeneration of grass and other plants. Artificial water holes and guzzlers were provided in those areas that become water scarce for wildlife during summer months. Other works like fencing, fodder plots, improvement of interpretation zone were also taken up. At places fire lines were made to prevent damage to the P.A.

Wireless sets were procured to improve the communication for better protection and for steady now of information and also to reduce response time. The staff was also provided with camping and field equipment's for effective management of the P.A.

To improve the planning process and to integrate the regional concerns in to management plan a workshop was organised in the month of July 28, 1998 and the proceedings were circulated separately.
