Crime Cell

Gujarat State is rich in faunal diversity being home for a number of wildlife species. It is the only home of Asiatic Lion & Indian Wild Ass. There are about 3,050 animal, 107 mammal and 526 avian species and it has rich marine life. Gujarat is paradise for the birds and has 29 out of 82 globally threatened species. It has 4 National Parks, 23 Sanctuaries and 1 Conservation Reserve having an area of 480.12 sq.kms., 16619.81 sq.kms. and 227 sq. kms. respectively for intensive conservation & protection of wildlife and about 8.6% area falls under protected areas.

Gujarat has always been having pro-conservation policies for the wildlife. As a part of recent wildlife conservation initiatives, Government of Gujarat has constituted a Wildlife Crime cell in the forest department to adeptly deal with the wildlife crime and for effective coordination & exchange of information with the central government, various all India agencies, wildlife experts, NGOs & other state governments and suggest measures to mitigate/curb the wildlife crime. Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) & Chief Wildlife Warden, Gujarat State is the chairman and Conservator of Forests, Wildlife Crime is the member- secretary of the cell. Other members of the cell include officials from the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau of Government of India, state police department, forest department, coast guards & customs department.

The cell is involved in intelligence gathering for prevention & detection of wildlife crime and take necessary action as per law. It coordinates with the central government, state police department, forest & police departments of other states, NGOs and other enforcement agencies to effectively deal with the wildlife crime. Details of suspects are collected, maintained and provided to the field units for timely action. Follow-up legal action is also taken by the cell in the cases registered under Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and field units are assisted during the legal proceedings.
