The Project

After the initial phase of project preparation the project activity began in December 1996. Following activities have been taken up so far:

Protected Area Management :

  • Strengthening of the Sanctuary fence.
  • Creation of artificial water holes for wildlife.
  • Improvement in the staff residential and office facilities.
  • Training to field staff in eco-development strategies, micro planning, PRA etc.
  • Staff study tour for joint forest management activities.
  • Habitat restoration, work eg. Removal of weeds, gully plugging, repair of old water point etc.
  • Improvement of reserve. and non-reserve vidis through participatory approaches.

Village Eco-development :

  • Organising meeting with the villagers of revenue villages, forest settlement villages and nesses.
  • Formation of eco development committees in these villages.
  • Three micro-plans viz. Krangsa, Natalia, Ghodawadi and one settlement dev. plan of Mindhaness have been approved by the World Bank and the work is on in these villages. A total of 80 micro-plans are prepared by the end of Mar. 2000. The work mainly consist of providing LPG connections, land leveling, parapet wall around wells, digging or deepening of wells etc.
  • Training and exposure tours have been organised for the villagers.

Impact Monitoring and Research :

  • More than twenty research topics have been taken up for field research.

Strengthening of P.A. management plan :

  • A workshop was organiscd for eliciting views from various experts towards preparation of Gir Bioregion Plan. The work is ongoing.
